Browser dependencies, slow test execution and script maintenance are a few things which makes poor ROI over application life cycle.
One advantage though is the top-down/end-to-end execution but I think the perfect compromise for high level test automation is via Web Services. Pretty fast execution, no browser(s) and possible to have robust test scripts...so having application business logic accessible through Web Services is something which increase testability as well as product value for your customers.
My advice is to leave the GUI mainly for exploratory and usability testing...
